Tutorial n°3: How to search for a specific collection?

To search for a specific collection in the old Explorer, you would choose the filter ‘Dataset Name’ (or ‘Institution’, or ‘IPT resource’). For example, if I want to retrieve all the occurrences of the Québec’s herbarium (QUE), I will:

  • Choose the ‘Dataset Name’ filter
  • In thr drop-down menu, click on ‘Herbier du Québec (QUE)’
  • Click on ‘Add Filter’
  • Click on the ‘Search’ button
  • Wait for all the occurrences to load…

In the new Explorer, it is as easy to have access to all the data for a specific collection.

  1. In the Simple search:

    • In the menu on the left on the page, click on ‘Attribution’
    • Click on ‘Choose more’, which will open a pop-up window
    • Click on the collection you want to have a look at, here ‘Herbier du Québec’. Note: if you want to select multiple collections, check the box in front of the collection name and click on ‘Include Selected Items’
    • Wait for the data to load, which will take really less time than in the Old Explorer, hopefully!
    • From there, you can view the data on the map, as a list of occurrences, or as images, and you can have access to some statistics.

  2. In the Collection page:

The collection page give access to all the collections available on the Explorer, wether the data are published through Canadensys or another Canadian institution. The categories on the left menu allow to search for targeted collections (only herbarium, or entomological collections for example).

    • From the Explorer, click on ‘Explorer’ in the menu bar, and choose ‘Collections’. This will bring you to the Collection page.
    • (Optional) Click on one of the tab on the left to specify the type of collections you are looking for.
    • On the map, click on the indicator corresponding to the collection of interest OR click on ‘list’, if you prefer to have a text view of all the collections on the Explorer. Click then on the collection/institution of your choice. This will lead you to the page of the collection/institution.
    • Click on the button on the right ‘Show the … records’
    • You are now back on the Explorer where only the specified collection is loaded
